[Just before the new year, a couple of gifts are brought to Annie's place, labeled with her name & Atem's.
One of them is the Ryslig equivalent of a Dala horse, three inches high in red and gold. Its eyes have been painted to resemble wadjet-eyes, and the pattern of the paint motif is of lucky pennies, from the year Annie was born, which he understands is supposed to increase their luck. (He did the math.) It's a mishmash of American, Egyptian, and Ryslig-ish symbols for luck and protection, painted by somebody with small steady hands.
The other was not altered by Atem: it's a crochet shawl that is very precisely made. No errors. All the stitching is perfectly even. It's in soft, feminine colors - pink with some sparkly gold thread woven through the yarn. The pattern looks a little bit like an intricate spiderweb, if you look at it right.
There's a child's hair bow in matching colors with a tag that says for Maribelle.]
